Israel war on Gaza live: Israeli tanks, planes, drones strike western Rafah

• Israeli tanks and drones push into Rafah’s western neighbourhoods as attack on aid-seekers killed at least nine Palestinians and injured 30.
• Israeli military spokesman says “Hamas is an ideology” and “we cannot eliminate an ideology” in contrast to Netanyahu’s repeated comments that Israel will not end its war on Gaza until Hamas is defeated.

• UNRWA estimates just 65,000 people remain in Rafah, where more than one million Palestinians had been seeking shelter before fleeing the Israeli military’s advance on the southern city.
• A UN commission that Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
• At least 37,431 people killed and 85,653 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks stands at 1,139, with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.

Israeli bombardment targets Gaza City road

Israeli forces have bombed a road south of Gaza City, killing one person and injuring others, report our colleagues on the ground.

The attack, targeting Gaza’s Road 8, follows a series of deadly attacks in central Gaza, including in eastern Deir el-Balah and the Nuseirat camp.

Without a ceasefire, healing mental trauma is impossible: MSF

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, as healing psychological wounds without it “will be impossible”.

MSF psychologist Davide Musardo, who recently left Gaza, explained his experience in a statement: “In some sessions we even had to shout to be heard, to overcome the sound of drones and bombs.

“And when there was no fighting outside, the background sound was the cries of children in the hospital. Children maimed, with burns or without parents. Children having panic attacks, because physical pain triggers psychological wounds when pain reminds you of the bomb that changed your life forever.

“Calmer children draw drones and military jets. War is everywhere in the hospital; the smell of blood is unbearable. This is the image I bring back from Gaza.”
